The lock without a key (Part 2)

April 15th, 2007

Secret of reliability
Durability of biometric locks – is, perhaps, the most important question arising at potential buyers. Thus very few people know that it is much easier to put out of action the mechanical lock, than the biometric one. It is enough to insert a match into the cylinder lock. “Biometrics” has no functional apertures which could be jammed. The area of a sensor control can maintain physical influence up to 3,5 ton-forces per 1 centimeter.
On a level of reliability and security biometric locks come nearer to the average and high level mechanical devices (or middle and high security according to the international classification standard), and on privacy they do not concede to mechanical locks with a high protection degree (there are more than 3 million combinations).
Patterns for memory
One of the main advantages of biometric locks relies in their convenience about what we have already spoken. They do require neither keys, nor magnetic cards, storing code combination. These locks have also many other advantages: an automatic reminder on the open door, night illumination, inclusion of an internal siren in case of breaking attempt, signal, reminding that it is time to replace batteries.
As if to lacks these are the characteristic disadvantages of all biometric devices. The matter is that all mechanisms of recognition in biometric systems – and in our case is a question of the sensor controls, distinguishing papillary pattern of fingers – are not ideal. The more sensitive sensor control is, the higher risk, that it “will not identify” not only another’s, but also the owner????????s fingers will be. Though it is considered, that papillary patterns should not be changed during a life, nevertheless there are different situations because of which on a skin there can be damages, grazes and the scratches changing fingerprint for a while. In order to avoid discomfiture, experts recommend programming a maximum quantity of prints of fingers in memory of the biometric lock. And the memory reserve allows doing this: many models can remember up to 100 prints.
The price of comfort
Cost of locks depends on many factors. These are the stability to mechanical damages, locking mechanism, and a degree of privacy, quantity of prints which can be reserved in the memory. In case of the household models used in premises, the quantity of prints usually does not exceed 100 and memory of office models can contain even 200 prints.
The average price of the biometric locks, used for apartments and country houses, – starts from 500 up to 1,5 thousand dollars. Biometric locks are rather expensive, but they are quite comparable to cost of mechanical locks of a high security class. Usually the price includes also installation of the lock.
Choosing the biometric lock for the house, it is necessary to remember the following peculiarities. If you have usual family you will easily buy the lock with 100 prints memory. Locks with greater prints memory are more expensive. Today????????s biometric locks world market is represented with the South-Korean and Chinese companies: Shenzhen Ideal Microelectronics, Bosch, Testech Inc., Hongda Opto-Electron, Linkmath Biotech and others.
